Avalanche Lake
Starting from the Avalanche area, the route first follows the shaded Trail of the Cedars through old-growth cedar and hemlock forest beside Avalanche Creek, where the water has carved the narrow and lively passage of Avalanche Gorge.
Beyond the gorge, the Avalanche Lake Trail leaves the boardwalk and climbs steadily through a cool forested valley, keeping close to Avalanche Creek as the route moves deeper between mossy slopes, rocky streamside openings, and the rising walls of Glacier National Park.
The hike finishes at Avalanche Lake, a broad mountain basin framed by forested shores, cascading waterfalls, and the high backdrop of Bearhat Mountain, Little Matterhorn, and Gunsight Mountain, before returning along the same creekside corridor.
