Chain Lakes Loop Trail

The Chain Lakes Loop Trail explores the dramatic alpine landscape of the Mount Baker–Snoqualmie National Forest, beginning here at Artist Point beneath the steep southern slopes of Table Mountain. The trail initially traverses open heather meadows and rocky terrain, with broad views toward Mount Baker, Mount Shuksan and the surrounding North Cascades, before reaching the junction leading toward Ptarmigan Ridge and descending into the Chain Lakes basin.

Continuing through the basin, the route passes the Mazama Lakes, followed by the striking Iceberg Lake and neighboring Hayes Lake, surrounded by subalpine meadows, blueberry and heather vegetation, boulder fields and the rugged walls of Table Mountain and Mazama Dome. Beyond the lakes, the trail climbs toward Herman Saddle, an exposed viewpoint where Mount Baker dominates one side of the panorama while Mount Shuksan and the jagged North Cascades open up in the opposite direction.

From Herman Saddle, the path descends toward the Bagley Lakes, gradually leaving the high alpine basin for the gentler meadows of Heather Meadows and Austin Pass, where the mapped section ends. This is the principal scenic portion of the classic Chain Lakes circuit; the complete loop normally reconnects Heather Meadows with Artist Point by way of the Wild Goose Trail, completing a varied hike of mountain viewpoints, clear alpine lakes and flower-filled subalpine terrain.
